Could you love a baby that wasn't yours?
Hens can be erratic and sometimes they lay their eggs in more than one nest box. They may also try to share nests...even when there are other nest boxes that are not being used. So, unless the hen is isolated, her clutch of eggs could easily contain eggs that aren't hers. But, when they hatch...there is only one mother...

in their eyes...
she is theirs...
and, they are hers...
