It's getting cold...that means the little guy gets the top bunk.
Enjoy it while you can.
Pretty soon, sleeping with Mama will just be a memory.
...like, a dream
...like, today
...like, now!

The Halloween Rooster
I can't figure out how to carve a pumpkin into a Halloween rooster. Especially, the feathers. So...I spray painted one of my roosters with orange paint. I wanted him to sit on the fence post...but, so far, he won't stay put. I guess it won't matter. Nothing is as scary as people pretending to be monsters. Why pretend? Many people really are monsters...hiding in a costume of regular clothes...or, a regular job...or, throwing a regular Halloween party. So, they never look like what they really are...except when they pretend to pretend...like they do on Halloween. Trick or treat!

Upon A Foggy Morning
It was beautiful and clear this morning. But, as the sun was coming up, a huge fog bank rolled in. That always makes picture-taking a little different. I think the camera allows more color into the shots. I don't know why, but they are very colorful.

We keep going...
Right now, there are some special individuals that are keeping me busy. The 'fighters' are recovering nicely. Also, there's an injured baby that is miraculous. I did not expect it to survive. Right now, I'm very pleased with its progress. And, then there are others, too. It might look like a bunch of happiness and fun...but, it's a lot of work. Birds that are this beautiful don't just happen. I had a lot to do with it.
So, let's keep going...
So, let's keep going...

Spur Of The Moment
Last night, I found some other bloody puddles in the dirt but it was too far away to be related to the big fight. I didn't solve the mystery until this morning. Another old-timer had a bunch of dried blood on one leg...the leg that was missing a spur. I don't know how this was done...the spur was broken off flush with the leg. I didn't think such a thing possible, because the spur on a roosters leg is an actual outgrowth of bone on the leg bone. It is typical to trim the spurs but this is done with an assistant and a sharp hacksaw. The spurs are usually trimmed to leave a half-inch of spur. The sharp cut-edge is usually emery clothed to a half-round(blunt) shape. This is like a new pair of shoes for the rooster. I should have trimmed the spurs on this guy a long time ago. I hate to fail these birds...
I doubt that this would have happened if the spurs had been trimmed. Another lesson learned...the hard way!

Out Of The Blue...Comes The Red!
Yesterday was a very nice day...until about 4:30pm. That's when I discovered these two roosters fighting like the Wrath Of God was upon them. They weren't interested in stopping. They are like adrenaline rockets when the 'FIGHT' switch gets turned on. They had plenty of fuel to continue...which might have meant death. I'm happy that Mr. D was a no show. Today, the rooster that was 'winning' is taking it pretty slow...the 'loser' seems to be oblivious to his own condition. He was singing on the handrail this morning. With any luck, this was all they'll need for a long while.

Just Beakause
Beaks? The latest fad?
Well, fashion isn't too trendy around here.
Most of the birds are content with their standard factory equipment. That doesn't mean the chicken world is completely devoid of some originality. In truth, it's nothing that they have decided to do to themselves. This has to do with circumstances that exist for everyone. Below are the two extremes. The broken beak was suffered in a very ugly fight. There was no winner. Only two exhausted, bloody and bruised roosters. The long beak is from being older...and maybe a little lazy. It is starting to resemble a bird of prey. I may file it down myself. This is my oldest rooster. He has been through everything twice. He is living such a good life right now, that he can't be bothered with maintaining an image. He is the only such beak that I have ever seen with my birds. Thankfully, we've only had one broken beak, as well.

Morning Rays Of Sunlight
Sunlight can turn into starbursts
when it reflects off of feathers.
Let the day be like sunlight
reflecting off of us
into starbursts of
experience
...and color.

In the morning
In the morning...
when the moon is at its rest,
You will find me
at the time I love the best...
watching rainbows play on sunlight
hoping you know
that I'm alright
In the morning...
tis the morning of my life.
Any daytime
you don't have to go too far...
If you need me...
I am with you where you are...
watching my love wait for your heart
to remember
that it all starts
In the morning
Tis the morning of your life.
In this lifetime...
it is only just a dream...
If you want to
We could be most anything
And if you dream the way that I do
when you wake up
you will know too
In the morning
Tis the morning of our life
(Tis the morning of my life)
when the moon is at its rest,
You will find me
at the time I love the best...
watching rainbows play on sunlight
hoping you know
that I'm alright
In the morning...

Reasons? (3 more)
The world can seem cruel and ugly at times...
But, that's no reason to wallow in self-pity!
If you look, there are a lot of reasons to remain hopeful.
Here are three examples of why I never give up!

Some More Hope
We are currently busy taking care of an injured baby. I thought the injury was very serious. The baby chick doesn't seem to know that it's injured. The injury is external and internal. The baby got a hole punctured in its lower back. The puncture also damaged the intestine(?) and it would be really easy to get an internal infection from the toxic leakage. The chick is only a few days old. The wound was only open for about an hour. It has been sealed ever since. We are giving lots of anti-biotic with its meals and lots of hope the rest of the time. The best advantage of being an injured baby, is that there is so much growing still to do that the body will overcome some severe adversity whereas a full grown bird with the same injury might not survive.
I don't have any pictures of the injured one...but here are some other birds that are beautiful and radiate positive vibrations. That's what the injured one needs...maybe that's what I need, too!

The Inner Struggle
So, I finally realized that it's my own reflection that bothers me. It won't give me any peace. I never know when it will happen. I think this will be the last time I look in the mirror. That guy's pretty mean...

Worlds Apart...Same Ranch
The old...
The new...
They are so different but, they are the same.
Like yesterday...today...tomorrow...
Separate...but together.
Where something is nothing.
...and, nothing is something.
Could it be me?
Why isn't it you?
Maybe, it is us!
When I get bigger...will I still be small?
If I am awake and this is somewhere,
maybe I'm asleep...
If I am asleep and this is a dream,
maybe I'm awake.
That's when I saw you...
so, what did you see?
The new...
They are so different but, they are the same.
Like yesterday...today...tomorrow...
Separate...but together.
Where something is nothing.
...and, nothing is something.
Could it be me?
Why isn't it you?
