Man's best friend...or, Chicken's best friend

Chicken Rancher Terrier?
Well, almost!
His name is Rocket. He is an American Pitbull Terrier but, he loves being around chickens. When we got our very first chickens, I kept them in a cage. When we finally had some chicks hatch, one escaped the cage. Rocket tried to play with it and killed it. I was so distraught over it that he hasn't touched a chicken since. It was just a beautiful letdown that we had to go through. Now, he chases the coyotes whenever the chickens sound the alarm. He loves them and they know it.
The babies even jump on his back, sometimes.
They love him and he knows it!

Let 'em flap!

Hey, you've got a really spectacular pair of wings there...
Would you mind letting them flap?
Very nice!
Thanxx!
(tee hee hee)

Belted!

How much could I love roosters?
Maybe my belts will help you decide...
I love my roosters more than I love nice belts...
That's a fact...

A new rooster in town...

I know you professional actresses won't be impressed...
but, the rest of you might!
Check out this bad-ass mutha...
Higher resolution pictures will be here soon...
(the camera is heavy...physical effort required)
(the camera is complex...mental effort required)
Although, this camera seems to do everything...
I am a beginner and will be easing my way into using it.
I want to help the camera to reach it's potential
(and, versa-vice).
Thanks, Dad!

Black and Red

It's been nearly a year since we've had a black and red rooster...
This is the end of the waiting!
In a couple of months, this rooster won't be hanging out with rabbits anymore. It will be time to sing for the hens...
We are very excited!

Serving Kings

Recently, I have been seeing more snakes than normal. Today, I caught three California Kingsnakes. There was one in the chicken coop around 1:30pm. Then, at 4:30pm, I went to the chicken coop and there were two kingsnakes in there trying to create some chaos. The larger snake was in a small cage with a mother hen and her baby chick. She was kicking at it fiercely. The snake was very lucky I happened by. The hen would have killed it. The smaller of the two snakes was checking around for mice. He was halfway down a hole when I grabbed him. They are so gentle. I have never had a kingsnake try to bite me, ever.
So, what does it mean to be surrounded by California Kingsnakes? It could be good news...like the rattlesnakes must have vacated the premises for fear of being killed by them all. Or, perhaps it means there are so many rattlesnakes that the kingsnake population is on the rise. It might even mean that I will need to change this blog's name to The California Kingsnake Blog.
There are many more snakes this year than ever before. Please be careful!

The Beautiful Letdown

Life is full of beautiful letdowns. These are the ugly things that we have to go through without knowing why. The beautiful letdowns might be practical...like causing an accident while running a red light. They might be mysterious...like having a pet disappear without a trace. They might be heartbreaking...like finding out you've been deceived by a loved one. They may even be expected...like predators killing my chickens. The beautiful letdowns are very painful to experience...and they always happen at the worst moment possible. It is possible to live life in an idealistic manner...but, you can't avoid the beautiful letdowns. It never seems like a good thing when your world is crumbling into ruins...but, when enough rain pours all over your parade, you will find your life is full of new flowers and brighter colors.
Pay heed to the beautiful letdowns...
they are the stepping stones of growth.
Wisdom is not a flower to be plucked,
but rather, it is a mountain to be climbed.
This is your life...
are you who you want to be?
